This innovate program has been operating since October 2015. We have 12 trained Volunteers who are rostered on 2 walks in a 3 month period. As the program is designed for carers after the loss of a loved one (from a chronic illness) it spans a 12 month period. In October 2018 we welcomed our 21st Walking Participant and we have had 4 ‘Graduations’ over the past 3 years.
This program is about walking, talking, sharing and reminiscing and takes place fortnightly on a Tuesday morning. The first hour is a walk around the beautiful environment of the North West Coast followed by coffee (and cake!). Our Volunteers are not trained Counsellors, but can listen and support- and our Participants feel comfortable to share with people who have had similar experiences in the loss of a significant other.
Coming up on March 11th in Burnie is a forum “Building Compassionate Communities” – several Volunteers will be providing an insight into our WTG program as part of some round table discussions.
